How gym climbing works.

There are essentially two types of climbing: Rope climbing and Bouldering.

Rope climbing, involving the protection of the rope, uses a “belay” partner, who manages the rope for you as you climb. New climbers with no belay experience must take the Belay Lesson class, or learn from an experienced partner, after which the new climber must complete a test to show skill retention and belay knowledge. If you want to learn more about how to climb, then we recommend you take our Beginner Rock Climbing Course.

Bouldering, climbing without a rope, entails climbing only up to 15 feet so that the climber can jump or down climb down to safety. This aspect of the sport is great to work on your strength or if you do not have a belay partner.

If you want to come and check out indoor climbing with staff assistance, please read about our Base Climb.

Taking the Belay Test

Anyone wanting to rope climb will first have to take a belay test, which allows the staff to make certain you are knowledgeable of all safety concerns and can manage the rope in a manner that keeps the climber safe. Belay tests are given upon request; please ask at the front desk when checking in.
